Greenwich, Connecticut is not the kind of community you would expect to find just 28 miles from mid-town Manhattan. This picturesque New England town preserves a small-town country feel, with 32 miles of shoreline along Long Island Sound, beautiful natural preserves and parks and rolling hills further inland. While its proximity to Manhattan makes it a popular residential town for commuters, Greenwich does not fit the stereotype of a bedroom community. The town is sophisticated, offering a diverse selection of cultural attractions, preserved natural areas, entertainment, dining and of course, shopping.
Town residents enjoy nearly 1,500 acres of park land, including two islands on the Sound with beaches served by town ferries; Greenwich Point offering a beach, boating and picnic facilities; and a large Audobon Center. The town also operates an 18-hole golf course, paddle and tennis courts, a skating rink and marinas. There are four private yacht clubs, eight golf clubs and a tennis and squash racquet club. Family recreation and enrichment are available through the YMCA and YWCA, a Boys & Girls Club, a teen center and the first chapter of Boy Scouts of America. |
The Greenwich Arts Council promotes the creation and appreciation of the visual, performing and literary arts through the Greenwich Arts Center, the annual Arts to the Avenue art show along Greenwich Avenue, the annual Greenwich POPS concert on the shoreline of the Sound and Youth@Art after-school workshops.
Settled and incorporated as the Town of Greenwich long before the Revolutionary War, Greenwich has hundreds of years of history, but offers state-of-the-art facilities to serve its residents. Greenwich Hospital, founded in 1903, opened a new $60 million facility in 1999 to better serve the Greenwich area. The Greenwich Library underwent a nearly $28 million expansion and renovation about the same time, creating a building with both distinct architecture and hi-tech capabilities. Greenwich's public schools are top-notch, serving 9,000 students. The district encompasses one high school, three middle schools, and eleven elementary schools. A number of prestigious private schools are also available locally. |
